Veuve Clicquot releases only its third vintage in a decade, declaring the harvest of 2008 worthy of its own self-expression. This also marks the first vintage by the hand of Cellar Master Dominique Demarville, who reclaimed the use of oak barrels for the first time since the House turned to all-stainless steel aging in the 1960s.

In 1810, Madame Clicquot, created the first recorded Vintage champagne from the outstanding harvest of only one year. Today, the 65th Vintage of the house continues to uphold her famous motto, ‘Only one quality, the finest’. Several factors were taken into consideration in the creation of Vintage 2008: the exceptional quality of the grapes; their natural alcohol level, indicating a balanced level of ripeness, and most importantly a remarkable acidity.

Cellar Master Demarville reclaimed the use of oak and commissioned 30 large oak casks, with wood sourced from forest in the Central, Allier and Vosges regions for the vanilla, woody and toasted aromas they would provide. These casks were then installed in a separate cellar which stored the 5% oak aged wines that were included in to this magnificent champagne. In his opinion, adding a new complexity to the aging process was the only way to give Veuve Clicquot’s expressive and powerful Vintages even more depth and dimension.

Extraordinary and highly underrated wines, Veuve Clicquot Vintages are a well-kept secret by those in the know who have discovered their exquisite flavour and beautiful ageing potential. The new Vintage 2008 are now available by the glass at SEVVA and by the bottle at top restaurants and wine merchants island-wide from the beginning of June.

Champagne connoisseurs will note that the nose is fresh, refined and elegant. Fragrances of citrus fruit and stone fruits, namely apricot and peach appear first, which are then enriched by the delicate, warm notes of sweet pastries making a subtle alliance of freshness and fullness.

A bright pink colour with light copper hues attracts you to the glass. A gentle and persistent string of very delicate bubbles form, exploding on the surface. The nose is fine and pure. It begins first with the aromas of fresh red fruits (strawberry, raspberry and cherry) combined with citrus fruit aromas (grapefruit) that match perfectly with the lightly spiced notes of cinnamon and vanilla revealed once allowed to breathe. Finally dried fruit and brioche notes delicately add to the richness and complexity of the bouquet.
