STUDIO SABINE MARCELIS

By Sabine Marcelis
New Zealand born designer Sabine Marcelis lives and works in Rotterdam where she runs Studio Sabine Marcelis. For her design is born out of “pure fascination for things.” We asked her to interpret the essence of Veuve Clicquot, drawing on her knowledge of product, installation and spatial design.

Veuve Clicquot stands for boldness, ambition, innovation and female entrepreneurship. It’s so inspiring and I certainly hope that my studio evokes the same energy as that.

“It’s a simple, strong bold gesture which draws attention to a singular bottle of champagne. The Veuve Clicquot yellow reminds me of very warm light, like a solar glow. I also work with minimal shapes a lot, especially pure forms like circles which are also reminiscent of the sun, so there is a really strong link between the two. The sun is an extremely positive, bold force just live Veuve Clicquot.”
For her, champagne means a celebratory moment of pure enjoyment. “I associate drinking champagne with positivity. Like at the opening night of one of my exhibitions when I’m feeling both proud, relaxed and excited at the same time. It’s for those bold moments!”
A keen traveler, she likes to live with her eyes wide open. “Inspiration can spark from anywhere, often in the form of the smallest, most unexpected details when I’m traveling. Nature is also a huge source of inspiration, like when the sun meets a passing cloud and creates this magical, changing moment. That’s why I love working with glass and cast resins, because of the way they interact with light.”
As a female entrepreneur herself, she feels a connection to Madame Clicquot’s own pioneering spirit and hopes to keep pushing forward with new creative ideas through unchartered territory.
